SOCIAL HOUSING FOR ABBEYFEALE: Plans for the proposed Social Housing in Colbert’s Terrace/New Street are now available (on request) for viewing in Abbeyfeale Library. Deadline for submissions on Part 8 Development is October 10. A Public Consultation Workshop has been organised with Limerick CCC Design and Delivery Department in Leen’s Hotel on Tuesday, October 2 from 4-8pm .
HARNETT REUNION INTERNATIONAL: The 2nd Harnett Reunion is going international and taking place on the weekend of July 11-14, 2019. It will be based in the Devon Inn and a full programme of events are currently being planned. The next meeting of the organising committee will take place on Thursday, October 10.
CHALLENGE: The 5th Annual event will take place on Saturday, October 20, starting at Dromtrasna National School, Abbeyfeale. All proceeds from this year’s event will go to the ‘Miriam Joy Cancer Treatment Fund’ and to Breast Cancer Ireland.
HONOUR FOR MAURA: Congratulations to concertina player, Maura O’Connor, Knockbrack, Abbeyfeale on being selected on the Comhaltas Tour of Ireland Concert group which will be starting off on a fourteen venue concert tour to the four provinces. Nineteen year old Maura is daughter of Vincent and Mary O’Connor and she is a second year student at Mary Immaculate Training College. Maura became All Ireland Champion on the concertina at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2017 in Ennis. She is a member of the Templeglantine Comhaltas craobh. The touring group consists of sixteen top class artistes, musicians, singers and dancers, most of whom who have won All Ireland honours. Maura’s many admirers and friends as well as all who enjoy an outstanding night of traditional entertainment will have an opportunity on Wednesday, October 17 when the touring group will visit Templeglantine’s Halla Inse Bán. Tickets for the concert are now on sale and can be got at Sheehy’s Hardware, Ann Lyon’s shop, Buckleys shop, Devon Road, Joan Hickey, Mountcollins and from Comhaltas members.

AFTERNOON TEA DANCE: A group of friends of the late Joan O’Keeffe, Ballymacjordan have come together to raise funds for the Palliative Care Unit at Kerry General which was a great support to Joan during her illness. They plan on holding an afternoon Tea Dance in Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse on Sunday, October 28 with dancing to Mike Condon from 3-6pm and ask for your kind support.

ABBEYFEALE FOR AFRICA: As Fr. Tim Galvin is in the area at the moment, Abbeyfeale for Africa are having a few fundraising events to help with his Mission in South Sudan. On Friday, October 26 there will be a pub quiz in J.D’s pub in Church St. On the weekend of November 17/18 Fr. Tim will speak on his work at the 12 noon Mass, there will be a church door collection and following the Mass there will be a gathering for light refreshments at St. Ita’s Daycare Centre. Then, as usual in early December, the annual cake sale takes place in St. Ita’s Hall. We ask for your support and look forward to assisting Fr Tim with much needed funds as he returns to his parish in South Sudan.
CHURCH GATE COLLECITON: Epilepsy Ireland Annual church gate collection for Epilepsy Ireland will take place at all Masses next weekend.
| SINGING WEEKEND: The Garry McMahon traditional singing weekend will take place in The Ramble Inn and Leens Hotel, Abbeyfeale from Friday, October19 – 21. The official opening by Darragh O’Shea, retired Kerry GAA player, will be at 8pm on Friday, October 19 in the Ramble Inn followed by a singing session. Saturday afternoon we have a singing session of songs that honour GAA legends past and present from the 32 counties of Ireland. This will be followed by Mass @ 6.30pm in the Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale which will feature the Abbeyfeale church choir performing Afrain ná Riocht as composed by the late Garry McMahon. The Sunday afternoon concert in Fr Caseys GAA hall at 3pm will honour the Carrig sisters Kitty and Nora. BOOK LAUNCH: A book on the betrothal (marriage) of Mary and Joseph by local author, Paraic Maher, will be launched at St Michael’s College Listowel on Thursday, October 4 at 7:30pm. The book is a beautiful presentation of the betrothal, featuring artwork from churches all around Ireland including Our Lady of the Rosary Parish church on the Ennis Road, Limerick, and the parish church in Cahersiveen. The book will be presented, by the musician, composer and founder of Siamsa Tíre, Fr Pat Ahern and the renowned stained glass artist from Brosna, Mr James Scanlon. All are welcome to attend.
CHILD SAFEGUARDING WORKSHOP: West Limerick Resources CLG will host a workshop for community groups on ‘Safeguarding – Children First Act 2015 & Children First National Guidance 2017’ on Thursday, October 25, at the Longcourt House Hotel, Newcastle West, from 7pm – 9.30pm. Community groups working with children are required to develop specific policies and procedures on how to create a safe environment to prevent deliberate harm or abuse to children. This workshop will provide an overview of Children First Legislation, developing Child Safeguarding Statements and accompanying risk assessments. COMMUNITY ADDICTION STUDIES COURSE: This free course aims to support individuals, families, community workers and local community volunteers to be better equipped to understand drug and alcohol issues in their local area. ADVICE FROM COMMUNITY ALERT: Abbeyfeale Garda Station 068 30010 (if station unattended the call will automatically be forwarded to NCW station 069 20650.) Contact any member of the committee should you wish to join our Text Alert Scheme. This was set up to immediately alert the community that an incident has occurred. The hope is that by raising awareness, people would keep a watchful eye out, contact the Gardai if they see something and thus help to deter criminal activity in our area. We have a current alert whereby you are advised to beware of bogus traders calling to homes re works from recent storm damage. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €66. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month. Please note that this fee is payable in a lump sum each year after year one. BEREAVMENT MEETING: Anam Cara Kerry, the organisation that supports bereaved parents, is holding a Parent Evening on Tuesday, October 9 at 7:20pm in Recovery Haven, 5 Haig’s Terrace, Killierisk, Tralee, Co. MOLADH GO DEO LE DIA: Much of the past fifty years is captured in a book especially complied to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale. The book contains many wonderful coloured photographs that show off the splendour of the Church, its stained glass windows and general embellishment. PHONE CONNECT SEEKS VOLUNTEERS : The Phone Connect project is a free community based telephone support service offered to older people in the West Limerick Area empowering them to remain independent in their own homes. The weekly service provides a listening ear to the elderly allowing them to share any worries or concerns and to be informed of any local events or services. West Limerick Resources is now seeking volunteers to make these phone-calls from a dedicated space where a mobile phone is available. All volunteers will be Garda Vetted and training will also be made available. RURAL SOCIAL SCHEME RECRUITING POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS: West Limerick Resources is compiling a list of individuals interested in joining the Rural Social Scheme (RSS). Participants on the scheme work 19.5hrs per week and receive a top up payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. To participate on the scheme you must fulfil the following criteria: Be actively farming over 1 hectare of land; Have a valid herd number; Proof of application for the EU Basic Payment Scheme for the current year and be in receipt of Farm Assist, Jobseekers Allowance or other qualifying payments.
