“WINDOW ON THE PAST: ALL CHANGED, CHANGED UTTERLY”: The West Limerick Heritage Network held a very successful event to mark Heritage Week in the Glórach Theatre last Saturday. The large attendance were treated to a talk by writer Felicity Hayes-McCoy on the role of women in social history, a film of an interview of Gerard Collins the former Justice Minister by Mary Shanahan who talked about his family involvement in the struggle for independence and a film from Limerick city archives. We were also treated to songs from the period sung by Ned Foley, Billy Lane and Jackie Harnett with music from Shauna O’Donoghue and Patie Boy Harnett. Patie Boy and his wife put together a country kitchen complete with Bean a Tí and cat with the help of Mike Shanahan and Sean O’Connell. Refreshments were provided by Rosemary Bennis from the Health Food Store in NCW. Well done to Suzzane Rowley West Limerick Resources, Margaret O’Connor O’Shea and Jenny McDonald who put so much work into the show and gave us a night to remember.
SALE OF PRODUCE FROM PARISH COMMUNITY GARDEN: We have peas, tomatoes, broad beans, spinach, kale, rhubarb and onions to harvest so we are going to sell them at 9.30am Mass on Sunday, September 11 and donate the proceeds to the outreach service for our local clients of the Brothers of Charity who give us a great hand in the garden every Monday.
FREE TO BE’ PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE: This Personal Development Course (6 week programme) starts Tuesday morning September 27 from 10am to 12 noon in the Further Education and Training Centre Abbeyfeale. ‘Free to be’ is essentially a positive way for people to make time for personal growth. It’s a gentle time for people to step back, take stock and examine how they are, where one can discover personal strengths in a safe confidential space. Anybody who feels they can commit to 2 hours on a Tuesday morning for 6 weeks are welcome. Booking early is advisable to secure a place on this course. SPIRITUAL FAREWELL GIFT: Time is running out unfortunately and Fr. O’Shea will soon be leaving us so if you would like to give him a parting gift of a spiritual bouquet then you could spend an hour in adoration in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel on either Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between 6-8pm or all day Tuesday and Friday when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. A card will be available in the chapel and you are invited to sign your name, date and time of making the visit.
6th ANNUAL NOLIE ROCHE TAG RUGBY: Cancelled last weekend due to the heavy rain and wind the Nolie Roche Day has been rescheduled to Saturday next, August 28. Registration is at 12:30pm and Kick off is at 1pm. This event is open to everyone, the motto of the day is to have ‘a bit of craic’. Along with the main Mixed 7-a-side competition, there will also be a Minis exhibition game, showcasing the future potential stars of the club. A BBQ and refreshments will be provided on the day, and there will be live open-air music from Larry Roche throughout the day, followed by the incredibly talented, Trevor Sexton, who will be rocking out the clubhouse afterwards. All proceeds on the day will go towards our under-age teams and Minis, so please come along and show your support. Everyone is welcome.

PHONE CONNECT SEEKS VOLUNTEERS. The Phone Connect project is a free community based telephone support service offered to older people in the West Limerick Area empowering them to remain independent in their own homes. The weekly service provides a listening ear to the elderly allowing them to share any worries or concerns and to be informed of any local events or services. West Limerick Resources, in association with RCCN (Housing) Ltd., are now seeking volunteers to make these phone-calls from a dedicated space where a mobile phone and credit will be supplied. Training will also be made available. ABBEYFEALE’S SINGING CLUB: West Limerick singing club monthly singing session take place on the first Friday of every month in the Ramble Inn Bar, Abbeyfeale. HOPE FOUNDATION: Transition Year student Ava Roche from Ballaugh Abbeyfeale will be traveling to Calcutta with some other TY students from Colaiste Ide agus Iosef next spring. Ava will speak at all Masses next weekend Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28 about the upcoming visit. A retiring collection will take place if you wish to help her to raise funds towards her work there.
