LOCAL HISTORY CONTINUED: Following the piece last week on Fr. Hartnett I received the following from Nicholas who edits the local history magazine“I think that this Daniel Harnett held lands in the Kilconlea area and lost them eventually. I believe that his daughter, Honoria Maria Harnett married one of the Protestant Sandes men of North Kerry. Their daughter was Maria Sandes. She married Maurice deCourcy, Catholic, of the North Kerry DeCourcys. They held about 268 acres at Castlefarm, Molahiffe, Firies, Co. Kerry, from Lord Kenmare. Their daughter, Agnes de Courcy married in 1847 John O’Connell-Curtin of Killeedy parish – son of large Catholic landholder, Cornelius John Curtin, Killaculleen.
John O’Connell-Curtin was murdered at Castlefarm House on 13.11.1885 by Moonlighters who raided his house for firearms. He had shot one of the raiders dead first – they held firearms to his son’s head. The family were boycotted and forced out of their holding afterwards. They had to have police protection – even while going to Mass on Sunday, There was ‘ructions’ in Firies Church one Sunday and the local women (!) dragged out the Curtin Family pew and smashed it in the church yard. The RIC ended up baton-charging the locals in order to protect the Curtin daughters. The Bishop of Kerry was obliged to ‘interdict’ the parish for six weeks- locking the door of the church and, I presume, denying the sacraments, etc.
John O’Connell Curtin’s mother was an O’Connell from Meenkilly- the (O’) Connells held a lease (commencing in 1791) of all the lands of Caherconnell at one time – most of 1,000 acres; they sublet to tenants also. It was a famous case at the time and there was worldwide interest in the fate of the Curtin family. Castlefarm House – a protected structure- still stands much the same as it was in 1885. I have visited it. The lands are set on a wonderful, rolling, limestone plain and are a joy to behold- green, rich, grassy slopes and lovely views. Also, the Curtin case is not much mentioned in Firies; the local people got an awful ‘scalding’ from all sides over the Curtin affair”.

You challenged my power, you chose to be brave, you could’ve said no and just walked away, if you could live that day over what would u say? Can i be your master will you be my slave? I promise i’ll stay with you and on to your grave.
