ABBEYFEALE STUDENTS BUILD A BANK; Six students from Transition Year in Colaiste Ide agus Iosef, Abbeyfeale: Muireann Hickey, Aisling Scanlon, Melissa Holland, Róisín Fitzgerald, Jackie Harnett and Kerry Ann Finucane attended the Regional Finals of AIB Build a Bank Challenge in Cork on Tuesday, February 26 with their teacher Mrs Ailish Collins. The students won Best Newcomer Award and each student received €100 One 4 all voucher and the school received €250 one 4 all voucher. This is the first year Coláiste Íde agus Iosef has entered this competition. The students had set up and are currently running the “Lipsy Bank” every Wednesday in the GPA area of the school. Here students can lodge money; the AIB Student Officer Mairead O’Shea then lodges this money into student accounts on a weekly basis. The students had to prepare a Business Plan on how they would run their bank and at the competition they were interviewed by three judges. The students were chosen as one of the top ten banks. They then had to make a two minute presentation to the audience and were questioned by head judges afterwards.

ICA: PRO Bridie O’Shea reports “A meeting of the Abbeyfeale guild of the I.C.A. was held on Tuesday, March 11 at the Abbeyfeale Adult Education Centre. An auction and raffle were held on the night in order to boost our funds. It was conducted by our own inimitable in-house auctioneer May Roche ably assisted by Peggy O’Neill, our Secretary and Ann Broderick, our Treasurer. May Roche would have no trouble selling ice lollies to the Eskimos! Consequently the evening, as well as being hilarious, was very successful, enabling us to make a generous donation to Self Help, Africa.. This was our last meeting before the A.G.M. which will be held on Tuesday, April 1 when old and new members will be made very welcome.

BIRTHDAY REMEMBERANCE AND ANNIVERSARY MASS: There will be a special Mass in Rathkeale Parish Church next Monday evening, March 25, at 7.30pm to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Fr. Ronnie Neville brother of our retired Parish Priest Canon James Neville.

1ST ABBEYFEALE CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL: The very first Abbeyfeale Craft Beer, Wine & Cider Festival will take place during this year’s Gather by the Feale. . It will be held in the GAA Hall on Sunday, July 20 from 2pm – 8pm. Craft Brewers from all over Ireland have been invited to share their wares with the good people of West Limerick. Anybody who is interested in good quality, fresh beers, wines and cider should come along to sample some of Ireland’s finest produce. CONSERVATION OF BUILT HERITAGE SEMINAR: West Limerick Resources will be hosting a seminar on caring for traditional buildings on Thursday April 10 (venue and time to be confirmed). ABBEYFEALE PARISH CULTURE PROJECT: As Limerick is the City of Culture for 2014 Abbeyfeale Parish Council are proposing that the community would complete a project on ‘The Culture of Abbeyfeale past and present’. They are asking for people to get involved in research on community groups and services with the Church as the central element. Community groups are asked to email the parish office on fealechurch with 50-100 words on their history and present activity.

ORAL HISTORY COURSE: West Limerick Resources will be running an Oral History Training Initiative starting this April. Training will consist of two elements. Participants will develop Oral History Interviewing techniques as well as examine the legal and ethical issues relevant to gathering Oral History. The second element of the training will focus on digital voice recording and editing techniques. Training will also explore how oral history can contribute to the local heritage of communities and identify suitable ways of showcasing their research. PARENTING PROGRAMME: A Pavee Point Parenting Programme will run on Wednesday March 26 in the Abbeyfeale Community Education Centre from 10am – 12 noon. The parent programme consists of a presentation and activities which explore the value of education, enrolment processes for pre-school, primary and secondary school structure, the difference between the Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied, attendance, the Education Welfare Board, bullying and discrimination and access programmes for University and Grants. LANGUAGE AND PLAY ABBEYFEALE: The Abbeyfeale Language and Play group runs every Tuesday morning in St Ita’s Hall from 11am-12.30pm. This is an opportunity for parents to develop friendships in a safe and friendly environment, while their children play and socialise together. ABBEYFEALE PARENT & TODDLER GROUP: Due to popular demand a second Parent and Toddler Group will now meet on Thursdays from 11am to 12.30pm in St. Ita’s Hall Abbeyfeale. The Parent led group provides children with an environment in which they are able to play independently with other children, while still having the security of their parents close by. With the data protection laws, priests no longer have access to the patient lists in any of the hospitals. Priests have no way of knowing when someone from their parish is in hospital. It is now the responsibility of family members and relatives, if they require a visit to let the priest know when people are in hospital.

MEN’S SHED: A fundraising card game will take place at Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse on Friday, March 21 at 9pm. Tickets €5. Table, spot and door prizes. Meetings take place every Monday from 6-9pm.
