NIGHT AT THE OSKARS: The Board of St. Ita’s Sheltered Housing are planning to launch a major fundraising campaign shortly. It is hoped to hold a public meeting to recruit volunteers from the community to make a series of short films which will then be voted upon at an awards ceremony based on the Oscar ceremonies in Los Angeles. Details will follow on how you can get involved and help protect the future of the invaluable service that is St . Ita’s Day Care Centre and Sheltered Housing.
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS: West Limerick Athletic Club came into being following a meeting at the home of Ann and the late Christy Cullinane, Killarney Road, Abbeyfeale in 1979. At that time no senior athletic club existed in West Limerick and the new club catered for athletes from Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale, Rathkeale, Dromcollogher and other parts of West Limerick. Many of the founding members were from Abbeyfeale, including Seán and the late Dee Harnett, Kilconlea Upper, Donal Harnett, Bridge Street, the late Christy Harnett, The Hill, Dan and James Harnett, Killarney Road, the Lyons brothers Noel, Maurice, John and Joseph, Dromlegach, Eamon Dalton, Purt and John Joe O’Donnell, Meenkilly, all members of West Limerick teams that won various county championships. A celebration of the founding of West Limerick A.C. takes place on Saturday, November 9 at Rathkeale House Hotel. Dinner at 7.00 p.m. Tickets €30.

ICA|: Since returning to the Adult Education Centre Mountmahon in mid September Mainistir na Feile ICA are a busy bunch. They organised keep fit classes with Joe Weir at Feale Fit, Mountmahon on Monday mornings and for the more adventurous bowling in nearby Tournafulla funded by the Go for Life grant. A very interesting and informative talk was given on the history of Abbeyfeale dating back to 1188 by Maurice O’Connell, Chairman of Abbeyfeale Community Council. It was well attended and truly enjoyed and appreciated. The Guild’s Golden Jubilee celebrations ended with a meal in NCW on October 8 last. A craft night is organised for November 19 next. If, God forbid, you are the victim of crime report it to 06830010 and get a pulse number before you disengage. Now that the winter is on the way check your personal alarm is working by pressing it and engaging with the monitoring service – that’s what you are paying the yearly monitoring fee for. Make sure outside lights and smoke alarm are in order. When using your credit card in a shop or at an ATM shield your pin number as you key it in. Be wary of being distracted and if you are and your card goes missing notify the bank immediately. If you write a cheque cross it ‘a/c payee only’. If you go on holiday post no pictures on social media until you’re home because there is a clause in most insurance policies now ( in the small print ) that you cannot notify the criminal that your house is empty and waiting for them to call. Invest in a house alarm too so that when the area is being cased the sight of an alarm does tend to make them go further. Wear Hi Viz jacket when walking – no load to carry and could save your life as drivers are being blinded by the low sun. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. Please note that this fee has increased by €6 and is payable in a lump sum each year after year one. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one. Then, in year two you will also receive a bill for the monitoring fee so in year one the bill will be €90 and in year two and every other year after it will €162 approx. CELEBRATING CANONISATION: The Irish Institute for Pastoral Studies, The Department of Theology and Religious Studies, Mary Immaculate College in association with The parish community of Ballybrown Patrickswell Present a very special evening to honour the canonisation of John Henry Newman Saint John Henry Cardinal Newman John Henry Newman’s canonisation provides us with an opportunity to mark this occasion in Limerick and in particular Ballybrown, as Newman has very real links with the locality. Newman was a close friend of William Monsell, (Lord Emly), the Anglo-Irish landowner who resided at Tervoe, Clarina. Newman visited Limerick twice in his life and on the first occasion he stayed in Tervoe House from 3rd to 9th August 1852. It was there that he completed The Idea of a University, and the altar on which he celebrated Mass is now located in the parish church of Ballybrown.
