|Preparations well underway for our concert with John Spillane on Friday, August 16th. The Cork singer songwriter was brilliant in his concert at the Glórach last summer, and brings an astounding pedigree, having composed over 200 songs and an opera since 1977. Original songs mixed with old Cork favourites and Irish songs many of us learned at school, and a great sense of humour peppered throughout the night are the hallmarks of a good John Spillane gig and is a tantalising prospect for mid-August, especially now that our Hurlers have exited the All-Ireland race. Tickets can be booked for this gig at 0871383940, but move fast as our last two concerts sold out.
Looking towards the Autumn, we’ve a packed schedule for September, including local traditional group Fuinneamh playing at the venue on Saturday, September 7th, Limerick singer songwriter Emma Langford making her Glórach début on Thursday, September 12th and a new venture for us two days later into the world of bluegrass music with the acclaimed Leroy Troy and his Hillbilly trio coming to town on Saturday 14th. All concerts start at 8 pm, keep an eye on our facebook page for updates, and if you have any enquiries or wish to book a ticket, don’t hesitate to call 0871383940

Bryan, a young man from Causeway has released several recordings recently, including a Christy Hennessy song ‘Denny St’. He is also much sought-after as a very humorous storyteller. He has been part of the sell-out Irish Rambling house Shows in England, Siamsa Tire and Killarney. Pat McCarthy is a well-established ballad singer, a member of the Irish Rambling House Show and Pat won the Sean McCarthy Ballad Competition last year with a song penned by Lyreacrompane native, Joe Harrington – ‘The Road John Murphy Made’. After that great start, seven bands will provide music in the marquee for the rest of the Paddy Andy Festival not forgetting the annual, keenly contested, Waltzing Competition on Sunday afternoon. Pat McKenna and Glenshane Country from Derry is the star attraction this year and will be on stage on Sunday night. This year the proceeds of the annual 5K/10K Run/Walk go to the fund for the renovation of the old Glen Schoolhouse as a Heritage House for Lyreacrompane and the Stacks Mountains. While this project is well advanced there is still a lot of fundraising to be done to cover the substantial costs. The Heritage House will be a very positive development in the wider area and the Lyreacrompane Heritage Group is hoping that people will support the Run/Walk in big numbers to help add to the vital funds needed. The other event of note is the very popular Guided Bog Walk with tea and a sandwich in the bog and a chance to cut turf with a slean. This event offers a great chance for children to experience an old-time rural activity. It starts from the Marquee at 11am on Bank Holiday Monday. For info call 087 285 3570 and there is also www.lyreacrompane.com and the Dan Paddy Andy Festival Facebook page.

COMMUNITY ALERT: Don’t post holiday pictures on FB until you come back, turn off your location on your smart phone so no one can check if you are out. If something sounds too good to be true then more than likely it is so be careful out there. Never give banking details, pin numbers etc. to anyone, the bank will not ring looking for them and they are the only ones who should look for them. Take care on the roads and make sure that you are visible to other road users so if walking wear a high viz jacket and after dusk carry a torch and if driving turn on your lights if the wipers are on. Lock the doors of your car when you are inside, do not leave a handbag visible on the seat. When you are at home keep the two doors locked so that if someone calls a second person cannot enter the house through the back door while you are occupied at the front door. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. Please note that this fee has increased by €6 and is payable in a lump sum each year after year one. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one.
