TOWN PARK NEWS: At a meeting of Abbeyfeale Town Park Committee on Monday night last, it was reported that two husky dogs had been in the park on Sunday and had attacked Park users and their dogs. On investigation it was discovered that the dogs in question had knocked down a barrier and had broken into the park from an adjoining property. On contacting the owner of the property, the committee received assurances that the dogs have now been removed from the property and will not be returning. We wish to advise the public that should there be a recurrence of such an incident or any other infringement of their enjoyment of Abbeyfeale Town Park to please contact the park office on 087 928 2322. We want all our patrons to enjoy free and relaxed use of the park at all times.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH: The third annual Christmas Lunch sponsored by Abbeyfeale Community Alert for the seniors in the community was a resounding success with over 130 people sitting down to a beautiful meal catered by Ann Kennedy. Chairman James Stack welcomed our new Superintendent – John Deasy – who took over the Newcastlewest Division recently and who mingled with guests following his speech. He was introduced by Community Garda Roger O’Donoghue who assured all present that Abbeyfeale Station is manned 24 hours a day even when it is not open. Fire Officer Jerry Lyons spoke on the importance of being aware of overloading sockets, smoking in bed, having a smoke alarm and a carbon monitor. We were then addressed by local solicitor Orla Dennison who told us of the importance of making a will so that your wishes can be carried out when you are no longer around. She also covered the tax implications for those inheriting. This brought to an end the serious business of the day and we continued with a raffle on the door tickets for the 29 spot prizes that had been donated by local businesses and individuals which enabled one in five people to go home with an early Christmas present. All those in attendance also received a high viz vest courtesy of the RSA and a special marker which can be used to mark property and which was supplied by Eircode. Dancing to the mellow sounds of Paddy Quilligan , followed by tea and Christmas cake and entertainment from the Flynn sisters, Tullig and Tess Lane Cahir brought the afternoon to a close. The general consensus as people left was Roll On 2019.

NEWS FROM THE GLÓRACH: Thanks to all who attended our screening of The Lonely Battle of Thomas Reid on Friday last, with many travelling a considerable distance to make it to the Glórach. There were not disappointed with a fascinating film that provoked much reaction and debate afterwards, with many commenting on the farming methods of the main protagonist and as to whether he should have taken the money from the IDA rather than fighting them. Almost all were agreed it was nice to have a happy ending for once, as all too often in life the underdog can be brutally crushed. We were delighted to bring the award winning film to Abbeyfeale in what was only the second screening so far in Munster, although that will be soon to change as the film has played to packed out audiences in Dublin and the Midlands, as well as garnering awards at film festivals abroad. Ticket sales are moving briskly for our Seán Keane concert that takes place at the Glórach Theatre on Saturday, December 15 at 8 pm. Our concert in May with the same artist sold out rapidly and proved to be a truly memorable night of music, song and anecdotes. If you missed his previous appearance, make sure to book in time for this Christmas Concert by calling 0871383940.
AFTERNOON TEA DANCE: This will be a fundraiser for Fr. Martin McCormack’s African Project and takes place on Sunday, January 13 at Fr. Casey’s with dancing to Donie Walsh and Jer Enright.

ADVICE FROM COMMUNITY ALERT: Now that the winter has truly arrived turn on your dims while driving to enable your car to be seen these murky dark days. If you have the wipers on then you should always have the lights on too. Ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station 068 30010 (if station unattended the call will automatically be forwarded to NCW station 069 20650) if you are concerned about anti-social behaviour. Contact any member of the committee should you wish to join our Text Alert Scheme. This was set up to immediately alert the community that an incident has occurred. The hope is that by raising awareness, people would keep a watchful eye out, contact the Gardai if they see something and thus help to deter criminal activity in our area. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €66. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month. Please note that this fee is payable in a lump sum each year after year one.
