SALE OF PRODUCE: The annual sale of the produce from Abbeyfeale Parish Community Garden will take place on Sunday July 22. It will be held in the grounds of the church following the 9.15am and 12 noon Masses. Proceeds will go to Fr. Tim Galvin for his áMission in South Soudan. Fr. Tim who is currently on holiday in Ireland may attend provided Kerry aren’t playing!

SUMMER OUTING: The 2nd annual summer outing organised by Abbeyfeale Community Alert was an unqualified success with 47 people travelling on Independence Day July 4 to the Gap of Dunloe and then Killarney town. We called into Teddy O’Connor’s on High Street, had dinner in Mac’s of High Street i Killarney town and finished up with Celtic Steps the Show on the beautiful scenic surrounds of Killarney Racecourse. A huge thank you to Emma Flynn who brought her concertina and entertained us all on the journey home, thanks too, to Billy and Tess Lane, assistant secretary Mary McArthur and Celine McNally for their singing, Billy Mangan for a most comfortable drive to and fro and most of all, to you who travelled, for your company. We’ll see you all again, please God, the last Sunday in November for our Christmas lunch followed by dancing to Paddy Quilligan.

SHOP LOCAL AND KEEP MONEY CIRCULATING IN ABBEYFEALE: I was in a more or less deserted Abbeyfeale town centre this morning and it got me thinking about what each one of us who live either in town or out in the hinterland could do to get the place buzzing again. Spreading our business, I think, would be a help so why not make a few stops when doing your shopping and help keep the small shops going. The big shops have a bit of everything and we tend to buy everything we need in the one shop but if we purchased the staples from the independent shops then we would be helping to keep them open. The reason they’re the bit dearer is that they cannot buy in bulk but they make up for being dearer by their support of local fundraisers, giving credit, putting stuff away and allowing you pay down bills. Think about it and next time you’re in town spread your custom.

JOHN SPILLANE AT THE GLÓRACH: The musician, songwriter, performer, recording artist, storyteller and poet from Cork with the fine line of banter plays the Glórach on Friday, July 27. Tickets at €15 can be reserved on 087 1383940.

ST. ITA’S FAITH CAMP: Annual Faith Camp takes place at St. Mary’s Boys N.S. from Tuesday, August 7 to Friday, August 10 each day from 10 – 3pm. It includes; Sport, Drama, Faith Lessons, Music, Art and plenty of fun. All children must be registered by Tuesday, July 31 with registration taking place on Wednesday, July 18 and 25 from 8pm at the school. First child €40 with subsequent children €25 each. SEISIÚN: The new season of the Comhaltas Summer Seisiún shows is at the Devon Inn on Thursday nights for the months of July and August starting at 8.30pm. These shows of traditional entertainment have proved very popular over recent years and are really enjoyed by all who attend, both local and visitor alike. A memorable night of top class song, music, dance and story is guaranteed comprising of a formal show in the first half and an informal second half where members of the audience are welcomed to join the performing group and provide a tune, song or step. Sometimes the night finishes with a set or a céilí dance.

MARQUEE IN BROSNA: We are promised a great nights entertainment with Lisa McHugh & Mike Denver next Friday July 13 from 7-11pm in Brosna Town. Funds raised will go towards the Renovation Fund and other important projects in Knockaclarig and Brosna churches.

A WALK TO REMEMBER: There will be a walk to remember all lost love ones on Ballybunion beach. Sunday July 15 at 1.30pm. All proceeds received on the day will be donated to The Intensive Care Unit, University Hospital Kerry.

TIPS ON CONSERVING WATER: Place a full litre bottle of water in the cistern in the toilet which will reduce the volume of water at each flush. Have shorter showers – an average shower uses 10 litres of water per minute, turn off the tap when washing your teeth. Use a basin to wash the ware and then use the water for watering the flowers. Pour the cold tea out of the pot on the vegetables. Only do a wash when you have a full load. Invest in a water butt under the down pipe.

BRUACH NA CARRAIGE: The Bruach Na Carraige Rockchapel Summer programme starts with our highly acclaimed Seisiun each Tuesday night during July and August starting on Tuesday, July 3 at 9pm. Our Summer Camp for children between 6 and 15 years runs from July 23 – August 3. Children attending this camp who have not played music before will learn a few tunes on the whistle, those already playing will learn new tunes. They will learn some traditional songs and four or five ceili dances, all mixed with much fun and games. MOLADH GO DEO LE DIA: Much of the past fifty years is captured in a book especially complied to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale. The book contains many wonderful coloured photographs that show off the splendour of the Church, its stained glass windows and general embellishment. The title of the publication is Moladh go Deo Le Dia. (Praise be to God forever). Price €10. The book is available in O’Donoghue’s, Marguerite’s, Ann Lyons’ Moss Harnett’s. There’s only around a hundred copies left so get yours as soon as possible.

LYREACROMPANE RUN/WALK FOR ENABLE IRELAND: In what looks like becoming an annual event, the roads of Lyreacrompane will re-echo to the feet of walkers and runners on August Bank Holiday Sunday, August 5. Last year’s 5/10K Walk/Run, as part of the Dan Paddy Andy Festival, was so successful that the organisers have put it on the calendar of their event again this year. On this occasion, the charity chosen to benefit is Enable Ireland. The Walk/Run will start at ‘the Marquee’ beside the Four Elms Bar at 11am. The route is looped and, apart from helping a good cause, the walkers/runners will get an opportunity of taking part in a real rural Ireland walk/run and see Lyreacrompane at its best.
