ACC MAKES SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT: Following a meeting on Wednesday, July 19 with officials from Limerick City and County Council, we are pleased to announce that Abbeyfeale is now included in a County-Wide pilot scheme which will see 4 CCTV Cameras installed along the Main Street and The Square. Work is scheduled to start before the end of the year.
SUCCESS AT THE MUNSTERS: Lisa Shine and Muireann Hickey came second in the Senior Duets at the Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Cork. They have now qualified for the All Ireland in Ennis for the fourth year in a row. We wish them the best of luck.
HERITAGE PLAQUES: A number of plaques were erected on Friday, July 14 around the Square and on Sunday an Italian couple stopped to stretch their legs while passing through and were amazed when they saw the plaque detailing the visit of Princess Cristina Belgiojoso to Batt Harnett’s which in times past was Leahy’s Inn. They got talking to the man who applied for the grant for the plaques – the Chairman of ACC and told him that they couldn’t believe their eyes as their daughter who is a teacher had done her thesis on the Princess and they were now ringing her to tell her that the Princess had been in Abbeyfeale in the dim and distant past.
SALE OF PRODUCE FROM PARISH COMMUNITY GARDEN: We will sell whatever is ready to harvest as well as jams, cakes, breads and scones on Sunday, July 30 outside the church after the 9.30am and 12 noon Masses and donate the proceeds to Trocaire. If anyone would like to donate home grown produce or home baking we’ll be setting up outside the church during 9.30am Mass.
ABBEYFEALE PRODUCES ANOTHER WINNER: Well done to Gavin Dillon Power Lifter who competed at the International Powerlifting Federation – IPF in South Africa recently. He’s a son of Patricia and Bernie Dillon and Bridie Cotter Weir’s grandson from Collins Park. His grandfather Joe is a blow in from Offaly but we won’t hold that against him! In the past couple of weeks Abbeyfeale’s Kodi Goad has brought back a gold medal in Kickboxing from Italy– her connections are the Grady’s from Meenkilly and Chris Smith from Collins Park brought back silver from Turkey. We are very proud of all our sporting heroes who are bringing honors to Abbeyfeale.

The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert but there will be a monitoring fee to be paid yearly to the installing company which is currently in the region of €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a monthly fee of approx. €12 on top of the monitoring fee. GRANT: University of Limerick electrochemist Dr Micheál Scanlon from Templeglantine has been awarded €1.5m European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. Dr Scanlon is the only ERC award recipient in Ireland in physical sciences, and one of only three Irish-based researchers to be awarded an ERC Starting Grant this year.

DAN PADDY ANDY FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS: A Cupán Tae and a slice of Dan’s special 20th anniversary cake! That’s what you can expect when you attend the opening event of this year’s Dan Paddy Andy Festival – the Irish Rambling House Show. The Festival, the 20th, is on over the August Bank Holiday Weekend and Thursday, August 3, is opening night with the first ever performance at the Festival by the Irish Rambling House – the show that has been traveling to England to entertain the exiles with music, song, dance , storytelling … and the craic, for many years. If laughter is the best medicine then the Irish Rambling House Show is the prescription. After the show there will be a roving microphone for a song or a story from the audience. It promises to be a real Irish Rambling House night and would be lovely for visiting exiles in particular. This year’s Festival, over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, has all the usual events but the big news is that Declan Nerney and his mighty band is back in the Marquee on Sunday night, August 6. The event has been extended to five days with some new events such as Ger’s Mobile Animal Farm and for the first time in that part of Kerry there will be a Sheepdog Trial demo thanks to Brendan Ferris from Killorglin. Both children and adults will enjoy. And for the young folk Sylvano is back – as if by magic! You can dance yourself silly in the Marquee to some great bands. There is a Ceilí with Tim Joe and Anne O’Riordan on the Friday night, a dog show on Saturday and for those left standing after all that there is a Bog Walk on Bank Holiday Monday morning at 11am with a Falconry display, music and tea in the Bog. The other new event is the 5/10K Run/Walk with all proceeds to the Kerry/Cork Cancer Link Bus. This is a worthy cause and a lovely route. POOL TOURNAMENT: A pool tournament will take place at The Elm Bar, Duagh over the weekend of August 5/6. It is a fundraiser for Karla Stack who has Lyme disease. It will start at 8pm, entry fee 10 per player with €100 for the winner. A raffle will also be held.
80’S NIGHT AT FR. CASEY’S: Put it in the diary. A back to the 80’s Disco will take place as a fundraiser for facilities development at Fr. Casey’s GAA clubhouse on Saturday, August 12 beginning 9.30ish. Leg Warmers are optional, mini skirts are a given , glitter and glam, velour, big earrings and spandex can be resurrected if you want to win a prize for your get up. Finger food will be served and there will be loads of spot prizes.
SUMMER TIME IS COMPETITION TIME: The Tidy Towns committee in conjunction with Abbeyfeale Community Council are running a competition this June and July for Best Shop Front and Most Improved Shop Front. CASABLANCA AT THE GLÓRACH: Our monthly film screenings continue at the Glórach Theatre next week with our showing of the 1942 film, Casablanca, one of the most iconic movies of all time. Set at the height of World War Two, and starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, Casablanca essentially revolves around the premises of Rick’s Café and Nightclub, where a diverse group of characters pass through and where the cynical and bitter owner will ultimately have to make a life-changing decision. Storytelling at its best and one not to be missed. For the Casablanca night there will be a prize on offer of a three course early bird dinner for two people at Leen’s Hotel on the evening of the screening of Citizen Kane plus free entry to the screening of Citizen Kane on September 6, also for two people. FREE COMPUTER AND INTERNET TRAINING COURSE: Digital Skills for Citizens computer and internet training at Abbeyfeale library beginning on Friday, July 21 from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. The course will run every Friday for five weeks and it aims to give beginners the confidence and skills required to benefit from the internet. The course will cover internet security, emails, search engines and websites, accessing government services, conducting everyday transactions, shopping, banking and security, and voice and video calls online. SEISIÚN IN TEMPLEGLANTINE: All those in the locality who enjoy a good night of Irish traditional entertainment will welcome the return of the weekly Comhaltas Seisiún show at the Devon Inn every Thursday night at 8.30pm. The show consists of top quality music, song, dance and story provided by a talented group of artistes, many of whom have won All Ireland honours. The traditional show is aimed at both locals and visitors and is very enjoyable. Towards the end of the programme of entertainment there is an informal segment where members of the audience may perform if they so wish.
ST. ITA’S FAITH CAMP: The annual St. Ita’s Faith Camp takes place from Tuesday, August 1 – Friday, August 4, 2017. Confirmation children especially welcome. We are asking families to host our visiting volunteers this year. We need bed and breakfast accommodation for the volunteers who come from afar – all other meals will be supplied at the School. FARM SAFETY WEEK: Farm Safety Week will take place this year from July 24- 28. The campaign will focus on a different risk each day. Farmers will be encouraged to take some time during the week to assess the safety of routine tasks. The message for Farm Safety Week is that farm safety is a lifestyle not a slogan.

YOUTH MINISTRY TRAINING: The Youth Ministry Team in the Diocese will be delivering a Youth Ministry Training Programme beginning in September 2017. This course is aimed at adults (aged 21+) volunteers or professionals who have an interest in working with children or young people in a parish or school setting. The aim of the training is to train people to deliver youth ministry programmes and events within their own parishes, to empower and encourage people at local level to take on leadership roles in the area of youth ministry. To offer practical support and resources as well as grounding people in the theory and theology of youth ministry. The course will be held on Thursday nights from September to December 2017 beginning on September 21. Weekend Residential Retreat October 14/15. There will also be one day of Safeguarding Training on November 11. We need a diverse mix of people with various skills and experiences to ensure the success of this event. Whatever your reasons or your focus, we know your skills and experience can help us and we would welcome your support in helping us create a successful, historic and joyous event. WMOF2018 volunteers will be assigned from a wide variety of roles to match their skills and experience. Tasks may include supporting information and welcome centres, transport hubs and event services at the major WMOF2018 venues. A volunteer must be a resident of the island of Ireland at the time of application. Be over 18 years of age as of 1st January 2018. Be sensitive and respectful of our Catholic ethos. Must apply for Garda vetting as part of the application process in line with the procedure laid down. MILFORD HOSPICE FAIR: For 40 years, Milford Care Centre has provided the best possible hospice care to the people of the Mid-West. We have always relied on the strength and support from our community in order to serve our patients and their families from counties Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. On August 27 next we will hold our 32nd Annual Harvest Fair on the grounds of University of Limerick Sports Arena with a theme of family fun. The fun starts at 11.00am.This year we will have ice-cream, music everywhere, kids entertainment, raffles, a specially designed kids zone with activities planned for the younger ones including a brand new puppet show, and lots of other fun activities for the young at heart. We also have a BBQ, cakes stall, pancakes, pig on a spit, popcorn, cool drinks, the wheel of fortune, many stalls selling lots of goodies, and lots lots more…We really hope you can come and join us this year with your friends and family to make it the biggest Harvest Fair yet, help us continue to provide the highest level of care to our patients and their families for another 40 years and more.
