GARRY MCMAHON SINGING WEEKEND: The 6th annual Garry McMahon festival takes place in Abbeyfeale on the weekend of October 17-20. Seamus Brogan will perform the official opening on Friday 17 at the Ramble Inn which will be followed by singing sessions in the Ramble Inn and Leens Hotel. Then on Saturday from 10.30am -1pm at Leens Hotel there will be free workshops on Irish and English singing and guidelines on composing Traditional Ballads. The Ballad competition takes place at the Ramble Inn at 4pm on Saturday followed again by singing sessions in the Ramble Inn and Leens. 12 noon Mass will be Aifreann na Riocht as composed by the late Garry McMahon and performed by the Senior Abbeyfeale choir under the direction of Dee Dennison. Later on, at 3pm in Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse sean nós singer and Killarney publican, Jimmy O’Brien will receive a special presentation in recognition of his contribution to sean nós singing and the weekend will finish with a farewell singing session from 6.30pm at the home of the West Limerick Singing Club in the Ramble Inn.

RUN OR WALK FOR MILFORD HOSPICE: The Dromtrasna Challenge, a fundraising effort for Milford Hospice, will take place on Saturday, October 18 at 3pm in Dromtrasna, Abbeyfeale. The choice of a 5 mile run or 4 kilometre walk will cater for all abilities, young and old. Registration begins at 2pm in Dromtrasna National School. Hot refreshments will be served in the school afterwards for all participants. CUISLE, a four piece fusion of traditional Irish Music and Celtic Rock will provide the entertainment for the post-race party at The Winners Circle Abbeyfeale. A barbeque will be served in the Beer Garden on the night. All are welcome. Donations at the door if desired to Milford Hospice. This is one part of a fundraising effort by Kieran Flannery, Dromtrasna for Milford Hospice. Kieran will also run the New York Marathon on the 2nd of November for this great cause. COMHALTAS CONCERT: Talented Abbeyfeale musician, Natasha Sheehy will star in the Comhaltas Concert Tour of Ireland at Halla Inse Bhán on Wednesday, October 22. BLOOD PRESSURE ROADSHOW: The Irish Heart Foundation is providing free blood pressure checks in communities nationwide. On Thursday October 23 the mobile unit, staffed by an Irish Heart Foundation nurse, will be in Abbeyfeale town square, 10am-1pm. This service is free and open to all the public. This local initiative would not happen without the support of the Limerick City and County Council and the Community Employment Scheme in Abbeyfeale.

MEETING: People from the West Limerick area who will be affected by the threatened closure of the Adult Education centre in Abbeyfeale are invited to a public meeting at the Centre on Thursday, October 23 at 7.30pm to formulate an action plan to save it. Those who attend classes in computers, yoga, business studies, horticulture, bee keeping, child care, furniture restoration to name but a few of the classes on offer, those who use the facilities to hold coffee mornings, groups who hold meetings there such as the Mens Shed, ICA, Arra na Feile, Mother and Toddler groups, Wednesday clubs and social groups like the Crafty Corner are all invited to attend. We do not have another facility in Abbeyfeale capable of catering for classes, social gatherings and meetings so it is imperative that the public come together and work towards keeping this fine centre of Adult Education open. Don’t forget the Tegasc report and its’ findings about Abbeyfeale – well, the centre is part of the fight back offering the people of Abbeyfeale second chance education and practical training so it is up to us keep it open and the opportunities that it offers available to all of our community.

NOONANS OF TEMPLEGLANTINE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS APPEAL: The family who are responsible for that magnificent display of lights every Christmas are holding a fundraising dance at the Railway Bar on Saturday, Oct 25. CARDIAC SCREENING: Feale fit will be holding a Heart Aid Mobile Cardiac Screening Saturday, October 25. The clinic will be open all-day from 9.30am-4.45pm. Each screening will take 20-25 minutes. Heart Aid will deliver a very worthwhile & comprehensive health check for everyone including Sports teams, players and club members, families, children of 12yrs+. PREPARING FOR THE MISSION: The Mission will run from Sunday, November 1 to Friday, November 7 with Masses Monday to Friday 7am and 10am and Evening Devotions Sunday to Friday at 7.30pm. Themes for the week include Living the Gospel, Reconciliation/God’s Mercy, Commemorating the Departed and Comforting the Bereaved. ADAPT: Domestic Abuse Services, Limerick will shortly be holding a series of information and support sessions for family members or close friends of women who are living with domestic abuse. The sessions will help those close to a woman to understand the complex dynamics involved and will be a support to people who are concerned about the safety of a woman and her children.
